Opera is a Web browser that offers lots of features to let you take advantage of today's Web. Popular features: Opera Turbo speeds up browsing on slow connections. Opera Link can synchronize bookmarks with other computers and mobile phones.

Opera is in the Web Browsers category of the Browsers section.
What's new in this version: W3C geolocation API, form auto-filler, support for jump-lists on Windows, support for presentation mode on Mac, better performance, tons of bug-fixes, opera:flags, using Chromium 29 engine.

Opera's move to Webkit and later embracing the Chromium engine signals a new, much more competitive push by the Scandinavian browser-maker to keep up with speedier demands, yet still maintaining some of the classic signature features of previous versions.
When you open the browser, you'll find a new Discover tab sitting on the welcome page. Opera will curate various news articles around the world. The left drop-down will list various topics and categories tailored around your interests. The right drop-down menu lets you discover content from around the world in various languages. The Discover feature may sound a bit like fancy branding at first for a news aggregator, but it's well executed and appropriate to Opera's mission of being more than just a Web browser.

Opera has maintained a consistent but small fraction of the browser market, with a noteworthy hold on the mobile market with Opera Mini on lower-end devices. Version 15 reflects a refocused initiative on performance, design, and surprisingly, content curation. It's still a long uphill battle when facing heavyweight titans like IE, Firefox, and Chrome, but if users are looking to embrace an alternative take without sacrificing performance, then we highly recommend taking Opera out for a spin.

The highest rated applications for health and exercise for iPad, iPod and iPhone

The iPhone is a wonderful tool and the number of real-world applications is growing by the day. With so many diet and fitness apps to browse on the App Store it can be a tough job finding one that just works. We have scoured the web searching for a selection of the best to share with you.
Unfortunately we were not able to find an app that makes you dinner at the press of a button. Nor did we find an application that makes you lost weight, lower your cholesterol, tone your abs or beef up those shoulders! Sorry!
But what we did find are some of the best diet and fitness apps which will make cooking and shopping a breeze by helping you organise shopping lists, calories and even providing you with amazing ideas for meals then showing you how to make them! On the fitness side of things we have applications that can measure and track your heart rate (both when stationary and now also while on the move!) Plus, others which will support you in new exercise routines or encourage you to try new things. Interested? Read on to find out more. Clicking the links will open the App Store so make sure you click the correct link for you.

    The Seven Minute Workout Challenge

the seven minute workout challenge app logo the best diet and fitness apps for studentsThe Seven Minute Workout Challenge App is one of the few apps on the app store which are based on extensive popular science. It is also one of only a handful of apps which are the official supporting app of an international fitness explosion!
This app is phenomenally simple and truly rewarding. Exercising is never going to be easy – you’ve faced up tho that fact no doubt by now. But with this app, you’ll find it doesn’t have to take forever nor feel like a chore.
The seven minute workout challenge app will show you 12 exercises which you are to follow for just 30 seconds. The exercises are dead simple and can be performed almost anywhere you choose.
Should you need any help with each exercise you can select to have a male or female trainer guide with step by step instructions through video, audio and instructional images.
Also featured in this app is a tracking functionality showing you progress with your weight and general exercise tasks. And as an incentive you are offered awards and bonuses for working out which are unlocked for free.
Once you get the app there are no pesky in-app purchases and you don’t even need wifi! Now that’s smart.
    Make it yours!

    Heart Rate Logger

the heart rate logger app for studentsThis application is dead simple and works like a charm. If you are seeking an app which will measure your heart rate in real time and will produce summary graphs from the data then this is for you.
The app was created in response to demand following the production of heart rate monitors that can be worn about the body which transmit information via Bluetooth.
The devices are called BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy Devices or Bluetooth Smart.) For this app you will require the additional purchase of a BLE Heart Rate Monitor which is worn across the chest. Take a look at the most popular brand compatible with the iPhone – the Scosche Rhythm BLE Chest Strap Heart Rate Monitor.
With the app you can measure your current heart rate and go back through your history plotting peaks and dips. This is an excellent way of measuring your fitness level via your heart rate by using your iPhone.
If you are serious sports person and are looking for something slightly more elite then I personally recommend the Mio Alpha Heart Rate Monitor Wristwatch. Aside from being an excellent watch it is incredibly accurate at taking your pulse from the wrist and even has USB functionality so you can download stored data. It out performs any application because it is dedicated to one task and doesn’t require a constricting chest band to be worn!

    Instant Heart Rate

the instant heart rate appI couldn’t write about the last application without providing you with an exceptional alternative which doesn’t require an add-on piece of tech.
Instant Heart Rate is a wonderful app that has stood the test of time in the App Store and repeatedly makes it into the top ten most downloaded health and fitness applications.
While it doesn’t do anything clever like producing graphs over time nor monitoring your heart rate while you go about your day, it does do something very special! (And very precisely too!)
Instant Heart Rate can show you your current heart rate simply by you putting your finger over the camera lens on the back of the iPhone. When taking a reading, the app will turn on the flash which will illuminate your finger. The app works by sensing the slight colour changes in the finger as blood is pumped and translates that into a heart rate.
It may sound a bit fishy but I have been using it for years now and find it to be 99% accurate when comparing it in real-time through using a Finger Pulse Oximeter.
By providing the app with your age and gender you are given parameters for which a healthy persons heart rate will fall between. Use this as a guide when exercising.
Plus, you can save snapshots of your heart rate each time you measure and tag it with the exercise you are doing. That way you can see your average and track progress with ease.

Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP offers great new ways to store and enjoy all your music, video, pictures, and recorded TV. Play it, view it, and sync it to a portable device for enjoying on the go or even share with devices around your home all from one place.

Simplicity In Design: Bring a whole new look to your digital entertainment. More of the Music You Love: Breathe new life into your digital music experience. All Your Entertainment in One Place: Store and enjoy all of your music, video, pictures, and recorded TV. Enjoy Everywhere: Stay connected with your music, video, and pictures no matter where you are. Check out the new Media Sharing feature.

The latest iteration of Windows Media Player adds a lot of useful bells and whistles, succeeding in many ways as a competitor to iTunes for Windows. A tree-style file directory makes it easy to find the music you want quickly, and a simple search box gets you where you want to go immediately. A five-star rating system lets you rate your music, then organize it by rating, so it's easy to group your favorite songs. Drag-and-drop functionality and a handy Create Playlist button take any confusion out of the process of making your own playlists. Creating the perfect mix CD is equally as easy--simply drag and drop songs into a Burn List in the right panel, then click Start Burn to finish. Ripping was reasonably fast on our test machine, and the program let us pick our preferred bit rate and audio file type.

The biggest new feature in WMP11 is the ability to sign up with paid music and video services. Without registering, we were able to browse various sites and compare prices among services including XM Radio--all from the Windows Media Player interface. We like the new, cleaner look, and the back and forward buttons make it easier to navigate. The ability to sort music by year released makes for some great reminiscing. Overall, we think the latest Windows Media Player offers almost everything you need for every type of media, making it a solid choice for an all-in-one jukebox.

    Windows Media Player

The ability to sort music by year released makes for some great reminiscing. iTunes is a free application for Mac and PC. It plays all your digital music and video. It syncs content to your iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV. And it's an entertainment superstore that stays open 24/7.

What's new in this version: This update corrects an issue with iTunes in the Cloud, where some purchases may download or play unexpected items.

An all-new Apple iTunes? No need to tempt us: We'll bite! The look is pure Apple, but the new iTunes 11 is also lighter, sleeker, and faster than the old app. It also comes with many new features and refinements, such as improved iCloud integration that lets you play your iTunes purchases right away on all your devices or pause play on one device and pick it right up on another. New Library Views clean up media collection clutter. Expanded views display album notes in place so you don't have to click back and forth. The new MiniPlayer is elegant. Best of all, iTunes is still free, even for Windows.

The redesigned iTunes layout stresses simplicity. It's classic Cupertino; crisp, clean, and timeless. A simple media player/search panel sits above a toolbar offering ultraquick access to everything you need: Library, Songs, Albums, Artists, Genres, Playlists, Radio, Match, and iTunes Store. If you're upgrading iTunes, you can go straight from the installer to the iTunes store. Since our setup was new, we pressed Scan for Music. The app quickly displayed all our tunes in the Music Library View, sorted by Song, Album, Genre, and so on. As before, playback quality is top-notch.

Current iTunes users have probably already upgraded to iTunes 11. But those of you out there who either haven't used iTunes before or gave up on previous versions, try the all-new Apple iTunes 11. It addresses many of the issues that drove users toward media players with smaller footprints. It's lighter and faster than any iTunes you've seen before, yet it does more than ever. Some familiar yet missing features (like the sidebar) are still available as options, too; only now you have a choice. We didn't try the Match service, but it seems like cheap insurance for large libraries, and it includes instant access anywhere with all your devices. If you're looking for a single app to handle your music and media libraries, your digital downloads, and your devices, we suggest taking a bite of the all-new Apple iTunes.

Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the Web faster, safer, and easier. Use one box for everything--type in the address bar and get suggestions for both search and Web pages. Thumbnails of your top sites let you access your favorite pages instantly with lightning speed from any new tab. Desktop shortcuts allow you to launch your favorite Web apps straight from your desktop.

Google Chrome is in the Web Browsers category of the Browsers section.

    What's new in this version:

  • Improved Omnibox suggestions based on the recency sites you have visited
  • Ability to reset your profile back to its original state
  • Many new apps and extensions APIs
  • Lots of stability and performance improvements

  • Chrome is the lightweight flagship browser that originated from an open source project by Google called Chromium and Chromium OS. It is now one of the more widely used browsers thanks to a vast ecosystem of extensions and add-ons, a robust Javascript engine, and a rapid-release development cycle that keeps it on the competitive end of the curve.

    Installation

Chrome's installation process is both straight-forward and self-sustaining. After downloading the installer, Chrome's installation process will launch with the standard practices of confirming system directories and a few click throughs. Google will also ask for your permission to anonymously collect usage stats, which can be opted out of.
The self sustenance comes from 'channels' ; Once you install the Chrome browser, Google will automatically roll out updates silently in the background and keep your software updated with the latest versions.

    Interface

Chrome's overall UI has remained stable since version 1.0: a minimal two row window with tabs resting above the address bar (Omnibox), 3 browser controls (Back, Forward, Stop/Reload), a star-shaped toggle for bookmarking, and settings icon. Users coming from older browsers might have to get used to not having a dedicated File menu layout but we found ourselves getting quickly adjusted.
As you install extensions, active icons will appear to the right of the address bar, but beyond that Google maintains strict restrictions on adding visible add-ons. That means no toolbars or any undesired overlays, which at one point was a widespread standard practice. Despite the limited customiseable options, Chrome is minimalist for a reason, and that results in a clean browsing experience with maximum use of screen estate for websites.

    Performance

Chrome is fast. Really fast. As of version 27, Chrome is powered by Google's own V8 JavaScript engine that renders pages at speeds that have been setting a standard for modern browsers. In addition, Google has been on the forefront of implementing best practices for HTML5 standards and though it's also currently running the widely used open-source Webkit engine, Google has also announced plans to move to Blink in the near future.
