A standard HTML file must have a file extension type of [ .html ]. You have a few options to create them, and it also depends on what operating system you use. Some people like to use plain text editors that have no robust markup features, while others will use a very robust text editing software tool.

Choosing a text editor

Plain Text Editors
If you want to test the HTML waters without going through the hassle of getting and installing some software package, I laid out instructions for both Windows(notepad) and Mac(textedit) users below on this page.

Robust Text Editors
Software exists that will do things like autocomplete your code, offer you code hints, built in HTML components for you, give you a design view to work in instead of code all the time, and many other things you may find helpful and productive. If you already have a robust text editing tool like Dreamweaver or BBEdit, they will render out HTML files for you easily in the "Save As" dialog. If that is the case for you then you can skip this information below and head to the next page.

Creating HTML files on Windows using Notepad

Open Notepad
Write your HTML code
Go to File >> Save As
Change the "Save As Type:" option on the bottom from "Text Document" to "All Files"
Type in the file name: "index.html" and press the "Save" button
That is it, you should now have an HTML file
After you successfully create an HTML file you should be able to double click the file icon and your default web browsing software will open it. That is how you test your HTML, run it in browser software. Browser software can also be told to open files from within the browser "File" menu(File >> Open >> browse for your .html file).

Creating HTML files on Mac using TextEdit

Open TextEdit
Open the "Format" tab and switch to plain text
Write your HTML code
Go to File >> Save As
Change the file extension from ".txt" to ".html" and name your file
Popup will ask you if you want to append ".txt". Choose "Don't Append"
That is it, you should now have an HTML file

String : as it applies to web development technology

A string is simply one or any set of alphanumeric characters, spaces, and symbols. Your first name is a string of letters. Your email address is a string of letters, numbers, and characters. Your social security number is a string of numbers. This paragraph you are reading right now is one long string.

Integer : as it applies to web development technology

Integer refers to positive and negative whole numbers. Numbers like "45", "0", "-9", "-571", are integers. Numbers like "4.75" and ".5" are not integers because they are representing a fractured number.

Floating Point Number : as it applies to web development technology

Floating point number refers to numeric values that are integer, or decimal numbers. The integer [5] is the floating point number [5.0].

Boolean : as it applies to web development technology

The term Boolean refers to a variable or literal that must only have a value of either true or false. A Boolean put into use as a variable gives developers a way to toggle between TRUE and FALSE dynamically in their applications. Booleans can also be represented as numeric values. 0 represents FALSE, and 1 represents TRUE.

Regarding the internet and programming a web document is a certain type of text based file that a web application uses to operate. Many applications require that we put many document types to use in order to complete a project.

Some documents used to power a web application or web site are:

*.html
*.php
*.xml
*.pdf
*.css
*.js
*.as
*.cfm
*.txt
*.ini
*.htaccess

Directory : as it applies to web development technology

Regarding internet technology a directory usually refers to a folder that contains files which are part of your web site or online application. In general terms a directory is an alphabetical listing of some sort. For instance a telephone book is a directory of names and phone numbers.

URL : as it applies to web development technology

URL is an acronym for "Uniform Resource Locator". It is a protocol usually used by browser software to specify and handle internet addresses or access to relative files on your web server. It is how people arrive at web sites and access files online. A URL can lead to a website, lead to independent files on a website, and initiate functionality of the browser software. It is a location reference much like your home address is how people can find you in this big giant world full of people.

Index : as it applies to web development technology

In web development "index" refers to the root of a file system or directory folder. When you get a web server online to put up a website, the file used as your home page must be named "index". Index is the root of a folder and is the master file in a directory.

HTML Element: as it applies to web development technology :-

An HTML element is an individual component of HTML. Elements are sometimes referred to as "HTML Tags". Elements are responsible for marking up content on web pages using tags that wrap content for specifying to the browser software how to treat the content.

HTML Tag : as it applies to web development technology :-

HTML Tag is the actual markup for an Element. Elements usually have an opening and corresponding closing tag, the tags are what makes up the element. We start a tag, place content into it, then close it making the element complete. Keep in mind that some HTML tags and elements have no closing tag and therefore cannot receive content, they(the void html elements) only receive attributes.

Block Element : as it applies to web development technology :-

An HTML block level element is one that takes up a whole display block on the page like a "div" or "paragraph" tag does. By default block level elements cannot be placed side by side horizontally on a web page.

Inline Element : as it applies to web development technology :-

Inline HTML elements do not take up a whole display block and can be laid side by side horizontally. Examples of inline elements are all of the text formatting elements and the "span" tag. The "img" tag is also an inline display element. The counterpart of an inline display element, is a block display element.

Void Element : as it applies to web development technology :-

Void elements are the HTML tags that we are not able to put content inside of, we can only give them attributes and settings. They do not have a closing tag like most other HTML elements, and they make no nest for content to be place in.

Event : as it applies to web development technology :-

In programming an "event" is a specific action or process that can occur. We listen for specific things, and then run scripted functionality in our web applications when they occur. It is known as "event handling". For example in HTML we have event handlers we can apply to our elements which are simply mechanisms that wait and listen for a specific event to happen like "onclick" of a page element.

Most programming languages also refer to events and it is a similar logic. For instance in Javascript or Actionscript we apply event listeners to our objects, and write functions in the app that stand ready to fire off if the event occurs.

Learn HTML web development online free Learning HTML is the first step to mastering the web. HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language, which is the markup structure for web pages. When browser software accesses a file it understands how to parse the document according to the file's extension.(.html - .txt - .php - .xml - .pdf - .doc - etc... ). HTML provides us a means of laying out and structuring our web pages using paragraphs, graphics, images, audio/video media, applications, forms, user interaction and much more. As it is with a few other open source web technologies that this website covers, HTML is maintained by the people of W3C. All web masters owe gratitude to the Consortium for enhancing the things we can do on our web pages and how we can interact with our users. When browser software reads an HTML document it interprets exactly how to render it from the HTML tags and elements laid out in it. An HTML document is just a well dressed text(.txt) file, given a different extension(.html) so browser software can communicate with it the way it needs to. HTML uses elements that have tags that wrap around your content and this is what tells the browser software how to treat that particular element and all of the content in it. Mastering HTML requires mastering the elements, attributes and event handling of the elements(aka: "tags"). It is key to know all of the elements at your disposal, this way you can choose the correct elements and avoid using elements out of the context for which they are specified.

A simple example to demonstrate how HTML works to structure data on your web pages:

<h2>We are creating web documents</h2>
<p>Paragraphs are simple to define using this p tag.</p>
<ol>
  <li>I am a list item</li>
  <li>Me too... woohoo!</li>
<li>I am the last in the list</li>
</ol>

On Your Browser

We are creating web documents

Paragraphs are simple to define using this p tag.
  1. I am a list item
  2. Me too... woohoo!
  3. I am the last in the list
