Macrium Reflect v5.2 Free Edition. An award winning disk cloning and imaging solution for free. Protect your personal documents, photos, music and e-mails. Upgrade your hard disk or try new operating systems in the safe knowledge that everything is securely saved in an easily recovered backup file. Macrium Reflect supports backup to local, network and USB drives as well as burning to all DVD formats. This version is for non-commercial home use.

What's new in this version: Version 5.2 build 6348 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

Backing up your computer shouldn't be a tedious task. Macrium Reflect Free Edition makes file backup incredibly easy thanks to its intuitive user interface and helpful wizards.

Installing the program did confuse us a bit, because although it's a free program, it refers to purchasing the program, and you're given a confirmation number. On top of that, the program recommends that you view the online tutorials before getting started, but you might have some trouble deciphering them unless you speak Italian. Luckily, the built-in Help menu is more than adequate and written in English. The user interface is simple but professional in appearance. Intuitive commands line the top of the window, and tabs reveal options for disk images, partitions, XML definitions, and scheduled backups. A helpful wizard guides you through the process of setting up your backup. We were able to quickly select our backup location (local hard disk, network, CD/DVD). Before proceeding, it provides you with a summary of your backup so that you can see the backup type, destination, compression type, and password protection. Here is also where you can make advanced configurations to the compression levels and file sizes.

The program did slow our computer while it worked its magic, and we were unable to browse or work with other resource-intensive programs at the same time. However, we were able to watch the backup process, and the program successfully backed up our C Drive without a hitch. If you're looking for a simple but reliable backup program, we highly recommend Macrium Reflect Free Edition to all users.

Google Maps with GPS Tracker shows your physical position in real-time on a moving Google Map. A small application on your PC uploads your GPS position periodically over either GPRS or 3G, which updates your position on a moving Google Map.
What's new in this version: Version 40.0 improves map functionality.

Golenfound's Google Maps with GPS Tracker is a small, free application that uploads your GPS position regularly via GPRS or 3G and then automatically updates your position on a Google Map display. You need a GPS device to use it, but you can download and try the GpsGate simulator software free for 14 days. Once you're familiar with Google Maps with GPS Tracker, you can buy a GPS device that suits your needs and configure the program to accept it.

A small, square, tabbed interface opened on the GPS tab, which showed blank fields. The program's Web-based documentation and assistance made the setup a snap. We clicked the Settings button and selected the GPS tab, which let us configure GPS Type, the COM Port on our PC we use to connect our GPS device, the baud rate, and kilometers or miles for distance, as well as choose to log our input. The Garmin Protocol tab lets Garmin GPS users enter their product ID, software version, and other data as well as set the protocol.

The Share tab contained a single button that let us share our current location via a Web site. Activating this feature called up a slider that let us configure the time out in minutes. The first time we ran the program, we had to permit access through the Windows firewall and our other security tools, but it opened normally after that, displaying our current location with the usual indicator on a Google Map. Since our movements were within the default GPS radius, we couldn't track them, but Google Maps with GPS Tracker will get a workout on our next trip.

We could also configure Google Maps with GPS Tracker to send GPS data to a wide range of outputs, including system ports, com protocols, and even Google Earth. We tried this last option, which included a setup dialog for configuring Google Earth's settings.

YTD Video Downloader is more than a Youtube downloader. It allows you to download HD and HQ videos, from dozens of sites and convert them to other video formats. The program is easy to use. Just specify the URL, similar to a Youtube downloader, for the video you want to download and click the Download button. From there, YTD Video Downloader will download the video from the URL you specified. The program also allows you to convert downloaded videos for iPad, iPod, iPhone, PSP, Cell Phone, Windows Media, and XVid, or play video that you have previously downloaded or converted.

The YTD Video Downloader interface includes a tabbed format for easy downloading, converting, and playing, and a new Activity tab allows you to keep track of multiple downloads and conversions in real time. The program has the ability to download full playlists as opposed to just one video.

What's new in this version: You can save videos from some streaming sites which were experiencing issues.

Downloading worked very well for popular video sites like YouTube, Vimeo, and Blip.TV. As in previous reviews, YTD Video Downloader quickly saved the default MP4 file to the directory of my choice, which is easily selected or created from the main screen. I tried various CNET and "creative commons"-tagged videos on YouTube and had excellent download speeds. I was sure to try out the most recently added site that YTD supports--the Chinese video site Youku--and was able to download a wonderful beetle animation easily, though it did break longer videos into multiple files (see below).

The free version of YTD Video Download only allows downloading to the MP4 video format, so the additional conversion functionality for changing the file to WMV, AVI, or MP3 is welcome, but why not just convert the download on the fly? Converting video files worked acceptably well, although I did crash the app once converting a Download Video Preview from MP4 to MP3. The conversion completed, but the program become unresponsive and I had to force quit. I experienced other occasional brief program hangs when downloading large videos from foreign sites.

Internet Download Manager is a tool for increasing download speeds by up to 5 times, and for resuming, scheduling, and organizing downloads. The program will resume unfinished downloads due to network problems, or unexpected power outages. The program features a full-fledged site grabber that downloads files that are specified with filters, for example, all pictures from a Web site, different parts of Web sites, or complete Web sites for offline browsing.

The program supports HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and MMS protocols, and has an adaptive download accelerator for MP3 audio, FLV and MPEG video files. The program also features Download Video and Audio Panels for Internet Exporer, Chrome, Opera, Safari, Firefox and other Mozilla based browsers that appears on top of a web-player and can be used to download flash videos from sites like YouTube, MySpaceTV, Google Videos.

What's new in this version: Version 6.17 build 8 resolves problems with downloading videos from several sites, adds support for Chrome 30, improves IE 11 integration (Windows 8.1), resolves high CPU consumption problem, and fixes all known bugs.

The name might not be the most creative, but the Internet Download Manager does exactly what it promises: helps you download and organize files. The best part is that you can schedule downloads and use filters to get the specific files you want.

The download and installation of IDM was easy and fast, and it uninstalled cleanly. If you're looking for a program that you can basically set and forget to video downloads, this is a good option.

If you don’t know how to type you are at a disadvantage. It is essential to learn to type faster, which often can be found for free online. In many professions it can be challenging to keep up with your assignments if you can’t type at a fast pace. I have known people who have had to retire early because they couldn’t keep up with patient notes as the world shifted from written notes to computerized logs. It is also useful to be able to type quickly so that your fingers can keep up with your thought process and get your ideas onto the page before they are forgotten. First of all, it is important to note that no matter how good you are at your improvised typing method (two finger typing or using all 10 fingers but in improper positons), you will never be as fast and accurate as you could be if you learned the proper finger positioning. Keyboards have been specifically designed to optimize speed and accuracy if they are used properly.
how to type faster

LEARNING THE CORRECT POSITIONING

On the keyboard you will notice there are two raised bumps, one on the F and one on the J. These bumps are to help you keep your fingers in place without looking. Your left index finger should be placed on the F and your right index finger should be placed on the J. Your left middle, ring and pinky fingers go on the D, S, and A respectively. This should feel like a natural placement for them to rest. Your right middle, ring and pinky fingers should rest on the K, L and ;. Your thumbs should be in the air, out of the way.  Their only job will be to press the space bar.
Practice using your eight fingers on the keys where you have aligned them. Go back and forth typing asdfkl; until you feel comfortable with the placement of these fingers. Your pinky should be used to hold down shift any time you would like to type a capital letter. I personally use the shift on the left hand side of the keyboard. Practice doing capital letters and also practice adding spaces (remember to use your thumb for the space bar).
Once you have mastered the main keys, begin practicing with words that contain other letters. There are many online programs listed below to help you practice your skills. Using the rest of the keys should come naturally if you are being careful to always return to the correct resting position and to not move your fingers too far away from this resting position. You do not have to use the exact right fingers for each key, but you should not be using a finger that is more than one away from the suggestions. This will help keep your hands in position.

Suggested keys for each finger

  • Right Pinky – Q, A and Z
  • Right Ring  – W, S and X
  • Right Middle – E, D and C
  • Right Index – R,T, F, G, V and B
  • Left Index – Y, U, H, J, N and M
  • Left Middle – I, K and ,
  • Left Ring – O, L and .
  • Right Pinky – P, ; and /
The pattern of diagonal lines formed by the keys each finger is responsible for can also carry on to the numbers and symbols above once you are ready to move on to more advanced levels of typing. Don’t include this upper row until you are efficient at typing the letters.
Aside from the technical rules you should follow when learning to type the other key point is that it takes a lot of practice to become accurate and efficient. When learning to type you are consciously thinking about where to place each finger. Your brain is working hard and it takes awhile to process what letter you would like to type, think about where that letter is located on the keyboard and then carry out the action of pressing it. Once you practice over and over and over again a brain region called the cerebellum takes over and you begin to type automatically without conscious thought. Once you reach this level you will be very quick and should be pretty accurate.
There are many online games and lessons you can do to practice when you are first learning the proper technique. However, once you have the basics the best thing to do is just to type as often as possible. I learned how to type back in the day when everyone was on AOL Instant Messenger. Spending every night talking to friends online helped me to master my typing skills. Try using Facebook chat, Gmail chat or any other online messaging system to practice. Your skills will improve rapidly!

Macs have some of the best free options for screen recorder out there. With the proliferation of personal videos on YouTube it is becoming more and more necessary to record your screen for a tutorial or how to article. Below are all free, however if you are willing to pay, you can add on a lot more features and options. The recorders below will get the job done for someone on a budget.

All Macs come with Quicktime Player, simply open it up and choose File> New Movie Recording.  This is a good option, but doesn’t have some of the extra features that the other programs provide. You won’t have to worry about formatting if working in iMovie. You can choose an area to capture instead of the entire screen.

With Copernicus you can capture parts or the whole screen, including a small video option. There are several features including the ability to set the frame rate, preview for batch preview when editing of different screen recordings. A downside is it does not record audio and can unfortunately only save the file in one format.

Capture Me is a free program to record your Mac screen.  It features a floating capture window, you can record short movies, and you can scale down captures to your liking.  Capture Me provides the options to save as png, jpeg, jpeg 2000, tiff or giff. You can record QuickTime MPEG-4 short movies.

Jing is a free program that provides the basic screen capture and recording but several other great features.  You can edit your screenshot with a text box, highlight certain areas, provide captions and share your video. Jing videos are limited to 5 minutes so if you want to record longer, try one of the other screen recorders.

iShowU HD is a free program that is meant to just work from the start.  You It was recently rebuilt to provide enough speed to capture 3D games and a new interface.  It integrates with Final Cut Pro and can capture audio.
