5 Best Free 3D Modeling Software

Posted by Unknown  |  at  05:00 No comments

3D modeling utilizes software programs to recreate three dimensional models of objects. It’s incredible the power you can get from some of the best free software programs. Of course your 3D modeling is displayed in 2D on the computer screen but can be printed using a 3D printer.  The software below allows you to model and object, render it with different shading/lighting and even animate it to move around. You’d be amazed the uses of 3D models in our everyday life.  They are used to create animated movies, model new buildings, and often times printed ads use 3D models instead of the real product (namely car ads). Many of the top software programs such as Maya cost upwards of $4,000!  Believe me, if you aren't basing your career off of 3D modeling, stick with the free software programs below.

Blender is free for all to use. It can create 3D models for any purpose, from modeling to animated movies. The site has helpful tutorials on it to assist in your creations. The program is flexible and has a wide variety of useful features, such as character modeling, rigging, solids modeling, animation tools, rendering, shading and many more.

K-3D is a free 3D modeling and animation software. It can be a little complicated for beginners, but is highly versatile and uses a plug-in oriented procedural engine. It does an excellent job of polygonal modeling. You can use it to create curves, patches and animations. K-3D features object-oriented plugin architecture. It is designed for professional artists and can create motion-picture-quality animation.

Sculptris is an easy to use, intuitive free 3D modeling software application that doesn’t require any installation. You sacrifice some of the functionality for ease of use and lack of installation in our opinion. On the downside it is not a standard interface and can be a bit confusing finding features or in the manual.

Art of Illusion is a fully capable 3D modeling software program, that can be used to render and animate objects. It is good with both photorealistic and non-photorealistic models. Some advantages to AOI are the built in tool to install extensions and the online repository.

Google Sketch Up is an easy to use 3D modeling program that can be used by both professionals and non-professionals alike. It is very user friendly and you can upload your models into Google Earth as well as integration with Google Maps. On the downside, it doesn’t have extensive features you may find in other CAD software and you cannot export to CAD in the free version.
